ABOUT CREW MISSION PATCHES: At camp, students are grouped into learning teams that we call crews. Just like NASA crews assigned to a manned space flight mission, our crews also create their own Crew Mission Patch. During our six weeks of camp, 39 crews attended. On the morning of day one at camp, students are arranged into crews. Then each crew designs their own unique Crew Mission Patch. The Flight Director and Certified instructors help each crew as needed. Each crew creates a rough draft of their mission design.
The 'roughs' or 'rough drafts' of each design is produced as commercial art by Doc Palmere, the Program Director. The first draft is shared on Tuesday morning, where each crew assembles and consults to make changes and corrections. A FINAL version is created and printed on photo paper. This Crew Mission Patch art becomes the new notebook cover for each student.
Crew Mission Patches are used to create all sorts of things for the students: Wall Art, Crew Mouse Pads, Ceramic Crew Mugs, T-shirt Decals, Chair Art, Interactive Puzzles, and large Wall Mural Posters.
ABOUT T-SHIRT DECALS: For the summer of 2024, we already have patch art from 2023 crews produced and ready to use. These Decals are used to personalize and decorate student tee-shirts. Students can add their 2023 Crew Mission Patch to one or more of their 2024 complimentary camp tee shirts.
The Crew Mission Patches then becore a part of the "decal collection" to be used in current and future camps. Our Decal collection for 2024 is growing. In 2023, the collection had 76 different Decal designs. This summer, for 2024, students will be able to select from over 125 designs.
Each day, decals are seleted by each student then added to their tee-shirt in the location of their choice. These are popular and returning students can bring last summers shirts in for decoration by decals. Dr. Palmere shares that got the inspiration for a Formula 1 type shirt from watching F1 races on TV.
Interestingly, when student where Space Voyage t-shirts to school, friends and classmates ask two questions: 1- "Where did you get that shirt" and 2, "Where can I get one."
Due to the new Juneteenth state holiday, and lost days, week three was integrated into other weeks of this summer. Every child in week three was successfully moved to another week. No crew pathes to share
